  • WHAT HAPPENED?

United are in the market for a new striker, with £72 million ($92m) signing Rasmus Hojlund scoring just six Premier League goals this season, and have been linked with a move for Delap. The 22-year-old Englishman, meanwhile, has had an impressive campaign in the top-flight despite Ipswich's struggles, with the 22-year-old scoring 12 times as the Tractor Boys were relegated back to the Championship.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United are one of many teams interested in Delap, who is expected to leave Ipswich to stay in the Premier League, but they are also said to be targeting more experienced stars such as Viktor Gyokeres, Victor Osimhen and Matheus Cunha to lead the attack next term. According to former United defender Gary Pallister, Delap is not experienced enough to solve the club's problems as he urged the club to go after more than one attacker.

  • WHAT PALLISTER SAID

"Liam Delap is aggressive, always looks a threat and was well schooled at Manchester City, but he’s still young, so if United sign him, I think they still need to sign proven goal scorer as well," he told . "Manchester United have already gone down that route with Rasmus Hojlund. What Ruben Amorim needs is a ready-made striker, a player who is going to get 20 or more goals a season and has experience. But it will be difficult to find a player of that quality, if you think the likes of Newcastle and Chelsea are finishing above United and looking to strengthen their team too. That is why Champions League qualification is so important. It would be huge, in terms of what United can do in the summer to attract players to Old Trafford, and to spend money on players. The Champions League makes a hell of a difference."

    WHAT NEXT?

Delap will be eager to boost his profile among the Premier League's top sides by having a strong end to the season. Ipswich face Brentford this weekend before visiting Leicester and then finishing off the campaign with a home match against West Ham on May 25.
